Software Development Engineer II

Melville, NY Full-time $100,000 – $250,000 / year

# Software Development Engineer II

Melville, New York · Full-Time · In Office

About the Role

Riverhead Financial Partners is seeking an experienced Software Development Engineer II (SDE II) to help design, build, and scale the proprietary technology that powers our commercial finance platform.

Riverhead develops software across client acquisition, financing workflows, lender matching, pipeline management, automation, data processing, analytics, and internal operations.

As an SDE II, you’ll take ownership of significant features and technical initiatives from architecture and design through implementation, deployment, and ongoing improvement.

This role is designed for an engineer who can operate with a high degree of independence, understand complex business requirements, make sound technical decisions, and translate those requirements into scalable production systems.

You’ll work directly with engineering, operations, sales, underwriting, and company leadership to shape the technology behind Riverhead.

What You’ll Do

  • Design, develop, deploy, and maintain production software across Riverhead’s proprietary technology platform
  • Own significant features and engineering projects from initial requirements through production
  • Design scalable frontend, backend, database, and API architectures
  • Translate complex business and operational requirements into well-designed technical solutions
  • Build and improve systems supporting commercial financing workflows
  • Develop integrations with financial technology platforms, data providers, communication systems, and other third-party services
  • Design automation that eliminates repetitive work and improves operational efficiency
  • Improve the reliability, performance, security, and maintainability of existing systems
  • Diagnose complex production issues and implement durable solutions
  • Make informed technical and architectural decisions
  • Write clean, maintainable, testable, and production-ready code
  • Conduct code reviews and help maintain engineering standards
  • Collaborate with SDE I engineers and provide technical guidance when appropriate
  • Identify technical debt and opportunities to improve system architecture
  • Participate in technical planning and product development decisions
  • Help establish engineering practices that allow Riverhead’s technology platform to scale with the organization

What You’ll Build

Our engineering team develops technology supporting multiple areas of the business, including:

  • Customer relationship management and sales infrastructure
  • Commercial financing workflows
  • Application and document processing
  • Lender matching and submission systems
  • Workflow and process automation
  • Client-facing applications and experiences
  • Data collection, normalization, and processing systems
  • Reporting and performance analytics
  • Internal operations platforms
  • Third-party API and financial technology integrations
  • Communication and notification infrastructure
  • Artificial intelligence and intelligent workflow systems
  • Decision-support and algorithmic matching technology

As an SDE II, you’ll have meaningful influence over how these systems are designed, built, and scaled.

What We’re Looking For

Successful candidates typically demonstrate:

  • Strong professional software engineering experience
  • Strong understanding of modern web application architecture
  • Experience designing and developing production frontend and backend systems
  • Strong knowledge of APIs, databases, data modeling, and distributed application architecture
  • Experience integrating third-party services and APIs
  • Ability to independently take features from requirements through production
  • Strong debugging and systems-level problem-solving abilities
  • Understanding of application performance, reliability, security, and scalability
  • Experience with Git and collaborative software development workflows
  • Ability to make sound technical decisions while balancing speed, complexity, and maintainability
  • Strong code review and technical communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • A high level of ownership and personal accountability
  • An entrepreneurial approach to identifying and solving problems

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field or equivalent practical experience
  • Professional experience developing and maintaining production software
  • Demonstrated experience owning meaningful features or software projects
  • Experience working across multiple components of a modern application stack
  • Strong understanding of software design principles and engineering best practices
  • Experience designing or contributing to production APIs and database-backed applications

Experience in fintech, financial services, commercial finance, or another data-intensive industry is a plus but not required.

We’re looking for engineers who can understand complicated problems quickly and build reliable systems to solve them.

Engineering Leadership

SDE II engineers are expected to contribute beyond individual coding assignments.

You’ll be expected to:

  • Take ownership of technical outcomes, not simply assigned tasks
  • Break complex initiatives into clear and executable engineering plans
  • Make thoughtful architecture and implementation decisions
  • Identify potential technical risks before they become production problems
  • Maintain high standards for code quality and system reliability
  • Provide constructive code reviews and technical feedback
  • Help less-experienced engineers work through technical challenges
  • Share knowledge and improve engineering practices across the team
  • Identify opportunities where software can materially improve the business
  • Balance rapid execution with long-term maintainability
  • Help establish technical foundations that can support Riverhead as the company scales
